Whistler has a range of accommodation options from hotels, Airbnb’s to campgrounds and cabins. Block booking rooms can often secure you a discount and will make logistics much easier for your guests.

Weather Considerations

Winter in Whistler is beautiful but can be unpredictable. Plan for cold weather and inform your guests about appropriate attire. It’s also wise to have a backup plan if the weather becomes too cold or wet for any outdoor activities.

As much as we hope for snow in Whistler – it often can be warmer in the valley which leads to rain.

Local Vendors

From caterers and florists to hair and make-up and entertainment, local vendors are familiar with the logistics of a winter wedding in Whistler. Hiring local expertise supports the community and often leads to a smooth wedding day/plan.

Activities and Entertainment

Consider incorporating winter sports into the wedding festivities, such as a group ski day or a scenic snowshoeing excursion. There are also local breweries, axe throwing, escape rooms, spas and more! 

Travel and Transportation

If you have international guests at your wedding – there are many options from Vancouver Airport to Whistler, including private transfers and coach companies. There is also the option to rent a car and drive up here – but often they don’t have the best snow tires for winter driving. It’s advisable to arrive at least the day before the wedding as the Sea to Sky highway can be affected by the weather and often close causing delays.

Once in Whistler, there are buses and taxis, and certain hotels provide a shuttle service. 

Legal Requirements

You will need to apply for a marriage license within three months of your wedding date – the only location you can buy a marriage license in Whistler is the Resort Municipality of Whistler offices which aren’t open on the weekends.

At any wedding in British Columbia, the couple, two witnesses and the officiant marrying them must sign the Marriage Licence and Registration of Marriage after the ceremony has been performed.

Capturing wedding photographs in winter, especially in a picturesque setting like Whistler, requires careful planning and some special considerations. Here are some tips to help you get beautiful winter wedding photos that you'll cherish forever: 

1. Timing Your Portrait Session for Optimal Light

Winter days are shorter, and natural light is more limited. Plan your photography schedule around the sunlight, typically aiming for mid-morning or early afternoon. This is when the light is most favorable and will give your photos a soft, natural glow.

2. Utilize the Snowy Landscape

The snow-covered landscapes in Whistler provide a beautiful backdrop for wedding photos. Take advantage of the natural scenery by having your ceremony outdoors.

When planning the location for photos – I know lots of great spots and able to ‘pivot’ if the weather changes suddenly.

3. Dress Comfortably and Warmly

Staying warm is important, as it will be more comfortable for photos. Consider a faux fur stole or a warm coat, and thermal undergarments. Also, have warm accessories like gloves and hand warmers (tip – bring extra hand warmers to put in your dress!). Comfortable footwear is essential too, perhaps switching into boots for outdoor pictures. You often can’t see boots under the dress.

4. Snow

If it’s snowing or raining on your wedding day – make sure you have an umbrella for photos and standing under in between shots.

Allow extra time after the portrait session to dry off and touch up any hair and make-up as needed.

5. Plan for Indoor and Outdoor Photos

Weather can be unpredictable, so plan both indoor and outdoor locations for your photoshoot. Indoor photos at the start is advisable – this is when you’re looking ‘fresh’ and haven’t headed out into the elements.
